do sterling silver earrings have nickel in them?

I am allergic to nickel earrings, it SUCKS. i was just wondering, do sterling silver earrings have nickel?

Sterling silver is always nickle and lead free. The most common alloy would be copper, but it really depends on the supplier. Always make sure if its true sterling silver you are looking for, that it has the .925 stamp on it anywhere. In terms of earrings, even if they are very thin, it should have the stamp located on the stem somewhere or the back of the stud (if they are stud earrings). Make sure they are not plated with sterling silver, as this is NOT the same thing. The plating will wear off, especially in earrings, and people with allergies will still be sensitive even with the plating.

Ok. This is my sixth or seventh time getting my ears pierced. Finally I've got earrings that I'm not allergic to but I would like to change them. The spa that I got them done at only has studs. Does anyone know where I can buy This surgical steel and nickel free hoop or fancy earrings? The type of surgical steel begins with the letter P.

I have very sensitive ears and I understand your problem! Many places that sell hypo allergenic earrings only have small boring studs or tiny why-bother hoops. Last time I went to Clare's they had a rack of hypo allergenic earrings for a reasonable price so I bought a bunch.. Some I wear, some I cannibalize for the hooks and posts. A few I took the ugly dangles off the hooks and replaced them with one of the bolder dangles that didn't have hypo allergenic posts. Some jewelery stores will replace posts and hooks for you. Michael's craft store sells some jewelry craft supplies including hypo allergenic ear wires, hooks and posts so you can replace allergenic posts with nickle free ones. Finally, also look for rhodium plated earrings. Rhodium is a precious metal that is also hypo allergenic, more so than surgical steel according to some. On days when I have very sore ears and I need to look professional and pulled together, I wear my rhodium plated earrings.
