Shudders Follow a Killing on Madison Avenue

The police said on Thursday that a search of the area turned up a Fabergé-style egg in a jewelry box that they believed the suspect had taken from the store and more »

Shudders Follow a Killing on Madison Avenue New York Times

The yellow crime-scene tape stretched from the elegant iron railing outside the century-old Florian Papp antique furniture shop, past the R. S. Durant jewelry store next door and down the sidewalk to the edge of the doorway of F. M. Allen, a luxury safari and sportswear shop. It stopped short of Pat Areias, a small, upscale belt and buckle shop where the display window was already decorated with red hearts for Valentine’s Day and a two-inch-wide alligator belt cost $720.

Just a few days ago, Donaldo Clough, 47, the manager at Pat Areias, had watched the rock star Jon Bon Jovi outside the shop’s window, waiting for a car. On Thursday afternoon, Mr. Clough stood behind the counter and watched detectives walk by the window. He watched a police van with flashing lights drive slowly down the street, blaring a recorded announcement that could be heard for blocks. News photographers and camera crews angled for the best shot on the sidewalk. The glass door of R. S. Durant still had smudges and a grayish residue after investigators dusted it for fingerprints.

One shop down from where Mr. Clough stood, that rarest of New York City crimes had happened: a murder on Madison Avenue.

A 71-year-old worker at R. S. Durant, Henry Menahem, was shot and killed during a noontime robbery on Wednesday. The gunman, wearing sunglasses, a black woolen hat and a scarf over the lower half of his face, told Mr. Menahem and a co-worker to fill up two canvas bags with gems. When they refused, the robber slid the magazine from his pistol, told them, “This is real,” and then slid the magazine back in before shooting Mr. Menahem in the chest, the authorities said. The gunman fled on foot and remains at large.

help! how can you check the authenticity of a piece of jewelry?

i won a raffle today at a cancer fundraiser called the Lukefest. the prize that i won was a really nice jewelry set. it contains an:
-18k gold plated bracelet with 13 green emeralds with quartz inbetween them. -(necklace)14 green emeralds put together into the outline of a heart with a sterling silver chain. - a gold ring with a heart shaped emerald in the middle and 6 quartz stones -a gold necklace with 3 dangling emerald hearts on top of one another.
**i dont know if theyre real or not because the boxes had a website on them, and the website seems very odd. the website is www.yoneed.com and all of the prices are written in lira's. i tried finding a website with the conversion from lira's to dollars. after all that, it seems that the prices come out to around $10 each. therefore, i doubt them --if u know how to figure out if these are real please help me! (everything looks real except for the ring?) also, help with the site or currency conversions would be great! thank you!!

you don't have to take it to a jeweler, because in some countries, gold is very cheap and so maybe in the country that uses liras, gems and gold are a common thing, so it does not cost that much. it is vary possible, because in india, you can get a lot of 24 karat gold for 1000 rupees and when you convert rupees into dollars, 1000 rupees= about $25.

Why don't you just take it to a jeweler? I don't think a fundraiser would try to screw you like that!

How can I tell if the stones in my inherited jewelry are real without paying to appraise?

I just inherited a pair of diamond and emerald (looking) earrings in draw. They belonged to my grandmother. I tried looking at websites that told whether stones are real, but they seemed base it on things you look for when BUYING diamonds.

The earrings in question are an inch long and are rectangles. They have ten stones (5 "emeralds", 5 "diamonds") in each earring. There are no labels on the earrings of any time (stamps, etc.). They are in a reputable jewelry store's box. They are not screw backs.

Any ideas?

As has been mentioned - it is very difficult to tell by a description and even with photographs would be hard.

If you want to try by yourself, definitely have a look at all those sites that are about buying diamond or emerald jewellery as they will still tell you what to look for - then get a magnifying glass of at least 10x power and have a good look at the stones and at settings. There may be a faded stamp somewhere there that you missed with the naked eye.

If you have a jeweller locally where you go to buy things occasionally - or have repairs done - I would venture to take the earrings in and ask if it is 'worthwhile' to have the earrings appraised. Many jewellers will tell you on the spot for no fee if the jewellery is costume. Of course, always get a second opinion if the information is free, just to make sure!

There is some marvellous vintage costume jewellery out there, so even if they aren't 'real', they may still have some monetary value, and of course, they were your grandmother's so will have sentimental value as well!

Dana Crane (DC) earrings from Law & Order CI?

Hello!
In Law & order CI (season 7 episode 4) I saw a pair of earrings, and the detective's pronunciation, as I could understand, was "Dana Crane". Not sure about the last name. Anyway, it's green emerald earrings, says DC on a black box. I tried to google it but with no good result... Is there a trademark DC aka Dana Crane? Or it's not Crane but something else. Someone has a link for that jewelry?
The only thing I found on the internet (some blog about the show) was that this earrings are expensive, but I couldn't find out they're name. Please? Can someone help me?

Dana Crane sounds a bit like Donna Karan.

Sometimes on TV, they aren't legally allowed to say a specific brand or company due to advertisement infractions so they make up names that sound like it.
