Getting Engaged on a Budget

Posted: Feb. 8, 2010

Any good woman – including those who end up carrying more carats than their age – knows that the depth of her man’s love and commitment has far more to do with the size of his heart and the quality of his character than the size and quality of the rock he plunks on her finger. But even on a practical note, going into debt for a big sparkly stone isn’t smart financial planning, especially at the moment when the two of you are just starting your life together and may have bigger expenses on the horizon, such as the wedding, a car, a house or a baby.

Still, many men have heard murky rumors about how an engagement ring has to be a certain percentage of their income – is this true?

“Oh, that old two-months’-salary myth ... A more realistic approach is to set your own budget, as each financial situation is different,” says Heather Levine, fashion editor for TheKnot.com. “For some men, the percentage rule fits into that budget, and for others it doesn’t.”

Luckily for the latter, there are lots of options for acquiring resplendent rings at reasonable prices.

Go Vintage

First of all, the most affordable option of all is using a (free) family heirloom – and don’t think you are only limited to rings. “Consider using a family stone, such as a diamond from a grandmother’s necklace, and have a jeweler set it for you,” says Levine.

I am interested in purchasing a loose, rough emerald stone. Is an "Emerald Crystal" a genuine emerald?

I know nothing about gemstones, but Im attracted to the emerald and Id like to have a loose rough stone, but when looking at them online, Im finding stones like "Green EMERALD Terminated Crystal-Chivor " and other types of names, which makes me somewhat sceptical about buying because I dont want to spend alot of money on something that is not 100% genuine emerald. Any help on what to look for, and where I could look to find genuine emerald loose uncut stones would be greatly appreciated. Emerald is actually the birthstone of Taurus, and Id like to get one for my girl..

Thanks for any help you can give...

Best Regards,
Steve

I would be suspicious of something labeled as an "Emerald crystal". This is probably a man-made substance (like cubic zirconium which looks like diamond) that gives the appearance of an emerald, but is something quite different. They cannot call it an "emerald" as that would be false and deceptive advertising, so they call it an emerald CRYSTAL to differentiate it from a true emerald.

There are places (like Ebay) that sell "tailings" from emerald mines in which you purchase a bag of rough emeralds still encased in the original stone matrix.

These are considered to be non-economical to process by the owners of the mines, so they sell them to interested parties.

I bought some ruby tailings and put them in my rock polisher, and I have some small pieces that may actually be gem quality. I'll find out as soon as I can find an appraiser.

I also bought some emerald tailings, but the inclusions were cloudy, and I would have to have them cut open to see if they were of gemstone quality. But then again, if this is the kind of "rough stone" you're looking for, it might fit what you are looking for.

That is probably the best source for rough emeralds for we common people.

I wish I could give you better info, but I hope this helps.

It is often hard to find uncut emeralds on the open market, because it it almost impossible to determine their value until they have been cut and polished. Your best first stop would probably be an actual gemologist, who could possibly give you a commercial source.

I wouldn't trust anything you find online to be anything other than costume jewelery.

Does anyone know where I can have appraised and sell loose gemstones?

I have a bunch of loose rubies, emeralds, and saphirres and other stones that I am not using anymore. Does anyone know where I can appraise and sell them?
Also, I live near Houma, if that helps any.
Please, I already know about ebay, so no ebay responses. What I need in particular is a place that can appraise loose gemstones, preferably someone certified with GIA, and then somewhere locally that I can sell them.
Thanks

try looking up the american society of appraisers to locate one near you. There is also louisiana coins and gems that do appraisals.

where can i go to find someone to buy loose gemstones?

I have a small collection of various loose gemstones that i would like to sell and would like to know where to go to sell them. my collection includes amethyst. lab created alexandrite, tanzanite, emeralds, opal, topaz, ect.

A lot depends on whether you're expecting retail or wholesale prices, or something in between. Also, a lot depends on the quality and cut of the stones as well as their size. How about advertising on Craig's List? You might, before you seriously try to sell them, ask a jeweler in the area for an estimate of the value of each, wholesale as well as retail, along with the size and description of the cut of each. You'll want an estimate of the jeweler's charge for the information you need up front. He/she won't do it for free. One major thing to remember is that loose stone, natural or man made, aren't nearly as valuable as set stones. The mountings are frequently what make the stones and the value of same to soar. It would be very helpful to have the info I'm mentioning on the stones before you get seriously involved in trying to sell them.

I hope this helps. I made and sold my handcrafted jewelry for a number of years. I wish you luck.
