Mother of Pearl?

I got a mother of pearl necklace for my mom for mothers day. I dont realy know much about different types of peals so I was wondering...is mother of peals just a cheap knock off of real pearl would it still pass as elegant...it wasn't necisarily in-expensive so I don't know!

Mother of pearl is just the inside of a shellfish. Both pearls and mother-of-pearl is made from a substance called "nacre", it's the oyster or abalone's own secretion to make their shells shiny so it doesn't hurt them inside. When sand or a bit of something gets stuck into their sensitive, exposed flesh, they cover it in nacre in order to make it less sharp and irritating.

Mother of pearl may be cheaper cost-wise per se, but it is VERY beautiful, and I usually prefer it over regular pearl jewelry, since it's more colorful and asymmetrical, which makes each piece unique, interesting and gorgeous. Your mother will love the necklace you bought her!

What are some uses for mother-of-pearl?

I have a lot of oysters outside and I want to see if I can use the mother-of-pearl for something. I know it's possible; I've seen pictures of necklaces, silverware, dishes, etc... complete with a short paper on what tools to use for mother-of-pearl. Do you have any other ideas?
By the way, I know this may not be in the right category, but I don't know where else to ask!!

A picture frame would be gorgeous, or maybe a nice tray or ornamental table top. Maybe if you have a local art or design studio, you can see if anyone there knows how to work with the material.
